BROM error 2005 (S_BROM_CMD_STARTCMD_FAIL) on MediaTek: why and what to do

Updated 2026-11-04 · Русская версия

BROM ERROR: S_BROM_CMD_STARTCMD_FAIL (2005) is a classic error when connecting a MediaTek phone. It is most often seen in SP Flash Tool, and similar text appears in service-tool logs. It means the phone did not accept the start command in BROM mode.

What happens on connect

  1. A powered-off phone with the keys held connects and enters BROM, the boot ROM mode.
  2. The tool sends a start command.
  3. If BROM answers, the DA (Download Agent) loads and work begins.

Error 2005 is a failure at step two: the phone did not answer as the tool expected.

Main causes

CauseHow to tellFix
Protected BROM (SLA/DAA)recent Helio G or Dimensitya tool with bypass for the model

Wrong orderport flashes and vanishespress Start, then connect
PreLoader, not BROMport shows PreLoader USB VCOMenter BROM with keys or test point

Protected BROM is the main cause on new phones

From recent Helio and Dimensity chips, makers enable SLA and DAA protection. The phone only answers tools with a correctly signed DA or an Auth file. SP Flash Tool with a plain DA returns 2005 or similar. Service tools such as TSM Tool Pro, UnlockTool and Cheetah Tool Pro use their own methods and connect on the same models.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Confirm the chip from the model code.
  2. Install a fresh MediaTek VCOM, disabling signature enforcement if needed.
  3. Power the phone off fully.
  4. Launch the tool, pick the model and operation, press Start.
  5. Hold both volume keys and connect the cable.
  6. If it repeats on a new chip, use a service tool with model support instead of SP Flash Tool.
  7. If the keys do not enter BROM, use a test point.

BROM or PreLoader

If Device Manager shows MediaTek PreLoader USB VCOM, the phone started a normal boot instead of entering BROM. Some operations work over PreLoader, but many need BROM. Hold the keys until the MediaTek USB Port appears.

Real-world example

A Realme C33 was being connected as MediaTek and kept giving a BROM error. Checking the chip revealed Unisoc T612, which needs the SPD driver and a different mode. On a Tecno Spark 10 Pro (Helio G88) SP Flash Tool gave 2005 while a service tool with model support connected at once. Identify the chip first, then pick the tool.

If the error is on an old chip

On older MediaTek (MT65xx, MT67xx without protection), 2005 is almost always the driver, cable or order. Reinstall VCOM, disable signature enforcement, use a rear USB 2.0 port and connect right after pressing Download.

What not to do

Glossary

Which tool fits

For MediaTek with protected BROM: TSM Tool Pro rental, UnlockTool rental, Cheetah Tool Pro rental. Check the model in the list before paying.

Bottom line

Error 2005 usually means a protected BROM, a missing driver or the wrong order. Check the chip, driver and port, and for new models use a service tool with model support instead of SP Flash Tool with a plain DA.

How to keep the data

Error 2005 itself does not touch data, but many operations after connecting wipe the user partition. If the customer needs data, read and back it up first. Save connection logs per MediaTek model so a repeat issue is solved in minutes.

Working efficiently

If you handle many budget MediaTek phones, keep a short note per model: which tool connected, whether a test point was needed, and the driver version. This turns a recurring 2005 into a two-minute job.
