Unisoc (SPD): driver, download mode and connecting to a service tool
Unisoc (formerly Spreadtrum, SPD) powers many budget phones: Tecno, Infinix, Itel, Realme C, Nokia C, Samsung A0x. It has its own driver, its own download mode and a short connection window.
Identify the chip
Look up the exact model code. Unisoc chips are labelled SC9863A, T606, T610, T612, T616, T618 and similar. One “series” may have MediaTek and Unisoc variants.
Install the SPD driver
- Disconnect the phone.
- Remove old SPD drivers.
- Install a fresh package as administrator.
- If Windows blocks it, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement.
- Reboot.
Enter download mode
Power off, hold Volume Down (on some models Up or both) and plug in the cable. A port like “SPRD U2S Diag” or “SCI USB2Serial” should appear under Ports. Some models need a test point.
Correct order
Start the tool, pick the model and operation, press Start — and only then connect the phone. Otherwise the phone leaves download mode.
Common errors
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Unknown device | install SPD driver |
| Port flashes | press Start first |
| Nothing appears | another cable, direct USB 2.0, other key combo |
Which tool
TSM Tool Pro rental, TFM Tool Pro rental, Cheetah Tool Pro rental, or UnlockTool rental if your model is listed.
Which phones use Unisoc
Unisoc is common in budget lines: Itel, Tecno Spark and Pop, Infinix Smart and Hot, Realme C and Narzo, Nokia C, Samsung Galaxy A03/A04e and many tablets. The same series often has MediaTek variants, so identify the chip from the exact model code, not the series name.
Checking the port in Device Manager
Open Device Manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT). When the phone enters download mode you should see “SPRD U2S Diag” or “SCI USB2Serial” with a COM number. An unknown device with a yellow mark means the driver is missing or blocked by signature enforcement. No change at all points to the cable, the USB port or the key combination.
Windows 11 notes
Older SPD driver packages are unsigned. Windows 11 may refuse them silently. Reboot with driver signature enforcement disabled, reinstall, and turn off Memory Integrity temporarily if the driver still does not load.
Unisoc firmware: PAC files
Unisoc firmware usually ships as a single PAC file. Service tools can flash it fully or by partition. Make sure the file matches your exact model and region — firmware from a similar model can leave the phone without signal or with a dead display. Back up the NV partition (IMEI data) first if the tool allows it.
Newer chips and protection
Recent Unisoc chips and firmware add protection to download mode. A method that worked a year ago may fail now. Check the tool’s changelog for your model and build before paying.
Real-world example
An Itel A70 (Unisoc T603) would not connect: the port blinked for a second and disappeared. The phone was being connected before Start was pressed, and the cable was charge-only. With a data cable and the right order, the SPRD port appeared at once and the job took a few minutes.
Before you pay
- model code and Unisoc chip confirmed;
- SPD driver installed, port appears after Start;
- model listed for the operation;
- correct PAC file for flashing;
- owner agreed to a data wipe.
Bottom line
Unisoc needs its own driver, the “Start first, cable second” order and a supported model. Do all three before the rental starts.
FAQ for technicians
- Can I flash a PAC with any tool? — most Unisoc-capable tools accept PAC; check the format support.
- Why does the phone reboot during flashing? — low battery or unstable cable; charge to 40% and use a rear port.
- Is NV backup always available? — not on every model; check the tool’s Unisoc options.
- What about Unisoc tablets? — the same driver and mode apply; key combos may differ.
Glossary
- SPD — Spreadtrum, the old name of Unisoc.
- PAC — Unisoc firmware package.
- NV — partition with IMEI and radio calibration.
Key combinations to try
| Combo | Common on |
|---|---|
| Volume Down + cable | most Itel, Tecno, Infinix |
| Volume Up + cable | some Realme C and Nokia C |
| Both volume keys + cable | tablets and some Samsung A0x |
| Test point | locked boot or newer models |
Hold the keys until the tool reports the connection, then release.
Most failed Unisoc jobs trace back to one of these, not to the tool itself. Ask the customer to keep the phone charged and bring the original cable if possible.
FAQ
Are Unisoc and Spreadtrum the same?
Yes, Spreadtrum was renamed Unisoc; drivers often say SPD.
Why does the port disappear?
Unisoc download mode waits only a few seconds. Press Start in the tool first, then connect.
Can I use the MediaTek driver?
No, Unisoc needs its own SPD driver.
Which tools support Unisoc best?
TSM Tool Pro, Cheetah Tool Pro and TFM Tool Pro are commonly used; UnlockTool covers many models too.
Does download mode wipe data?
Entering the mode does not; most operations performed in it do.
